Our Christian Private School’s Character Accountability System
A STANDARD THAT IS NOT HELD ACCOUNTABLE IS MERELY A SUGGESTION.
In an effort to hold students to the biblical standard, here at our Christian private school, starting as early as our Christian kindergarten, each student is invested in through a character tracking system. This system allows students’ teachers to measure their character growth using the following character traits:
AT CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL WE VALUE CHARACTER
The character begins in the heart of the child. At the heart of each of us is the center for decision-making, relationship building and the discernment to choose right from wrong. Proverbs 4:23 teaches us to guard our hearts. Matthew 12:34 shows us that out of the heart the mouth speaks. And Matthew 6:21 says that the things we treasure are tied to our hearts. If a child’s heart is steered to know and love Jesus, embrace God’s word, and follow His truth, then the behavior will likely bear much fruit. As such, we place a high value and training the heart of a child.
Three character traits that we emphasize at CCS are Love, Honor, and Obey.
- Love
Jesus said in Matthew 22:36-40 that the greatest command of all those listed in the Old Testament was to love God with all your heart, mind and soul. He followed it by saying that the second greatest command is like the first and that is to love others as yourself. All other commands and character hinge on these two commands.
- Honor
Honor is to treat others as special and to do more than is expected. Honor is a trait that is important in building healthy relationships with others. In Philippians, 2:3,4 Paul shares that we are to consider others above ourselves and walk in a relationship with humility. By showing respect and treating others as special, we are putting the needs of others before our own. In essence it is choosing to be a blessing.
- Obey
Learning to obey is an essential life skill. From local laws to a job, to the people God puts over us it is important to learn how to listen and follow directions. By training students in this skill we are also training them to listen to God’s voice and obey Him. In 2 John 1:6 we learn that we show our love for God by obeying Him. At CCS, we teach that obedience is doing the right thing, the right away, at the right time. By teaching right from wrong, we give students a foundation for choosing to obey.
Each student’s Growth Points, and, when necessary, Character Infractions, are logged by their teachers. Unique among Christian private schools in Harrisonburg VA, these are made visible to parents through Cornerstone Christian School’s private online parent portal. Our teachers will always relate all character issues in a redemptive way as we seek to reach the heart, not just to conform behavior.
